Programs of Study
Undergraduate Study in Biological Sciences
The Undergraduate Program is designed to provide students with a broad foundation in both content and hands-on experience in the biological sciences. Students are encouraged to take courses across all the content areas of the biological sciences. Major areas of study include Biology (BA or BS), Molecular Biology (BA or BS), Ecology and Biodiversity (BA or BS), Integrated Sciences (BA) or Animal Technology (BS). A concentration in Cognitive Neuroscience (BA or BS) is also offered in conjunction with the Department of Psychology.
Students who choose to major outside Biological Sciences can earn a minor in any one of three areas - Biology, Molecular Biology or Ecology and Biodiversity.
Preparation for Graduate and Medical Training
- Information and links about life after undergraduate training at DU.
- Frequently asked questions about medical training programs.
- The PreProfessional Committee and recommendation letter packet for medical school application.
Graduate Study in Biological Sciences
The Department of Biological Sciences provides opportunities for graduate training at the Doctoral (Ph.D.) or Masters (M.S.) level. The graduate program involves a combination of course work, lab or field research and a defended thesis. Students begin their thesis research under the direction of a faculty member during the first year. All students are expected to publish their work in peer reviewed scientific journals. Students also have the opportunity to participate in teaching undergraduate courses.
Areas of research emphasis in the department include:
- Cell & Molecular Biology - including biophysics, neuroscience, cell signaling and physiology, developmental biology, molecular evolution, and molecular forensics (Learn more about opportunities in biophysics)
- Ecology, Biodiversity & Evolution - including biogeochemistry, conservation biology, restoration ecology and molecular evolution
