Undergraduate Animal Technology Program
The Animal Technology Program combines three years of academic study on the DU campus with training experience at the Bel-Rea Institute. A certified Animal Technologist is a veterinary medical assistant with competence in animal nursing and clinical veterinary practices.
A student interested in a career as an Animal Technologist may complete the clinical program at Bel-Rea Institute before continuing with studies at the University.
For students who complete an Associate degree at Bel-Rea before coming to DU, 45 hrs will be accepted as transfer credit toward the BS in Animal Technology. The coursework at Bel-Rea constitutes the 45-hr major, and the coursework at DU earns at Biology minor plus additional coursework to earn a bachelor's degree.
There are career opportunities for animal technologists in a variety of clinical veterinary practices and related fields including pharmaceutical sales, kennel management, equine practice, companion animal practice, exotic animal practice, animal dentistry, wildlife medicine, nutritional counseling, biomedical research, and animal control. Teaching positions in animal technology programs are also available. Many city, county and state agencies employ animal technicians.
